Model brain dead after being hit by bus in New York

A Swedish runway model was left brain dead after her bicycle was hit by a bus in Manhattan Oct. 8. The 29-year-old was not wearing a helmet.

According to police, the model was riding down Main Street on Roosevelt Island around 9:18 p.m. when she was knocked from her bike by a bus making a left turn. She suffered severe head trauma when she struck the pavement. The bus driver reportedly failed to yield, but he has not yet been charged.

The victim, a former "Sweden's Next Top Model" contestant, was taken to New York Cornell Hospital where she underwent two surgeries to stop bleeding in her brain. She is unable to breathe on her own and is on life support. Family members said doctors are not optimistic about her chances of recovery.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 726 pedal bike riders were killed in motor vehicle accidents in 2012 and another 49,000 were injured. Of the fatalities, 69 percent happened in urban areas and 48 percent happened between 4 p.m. and 11:59 p.m. Bicyclists and motor vehicles are required to follow the traffic safety rules while sharing the road. Drivers must allow clearance for bicycles and yield to cyclists when driving through or turning at intersections.

Anyone who has suffered serious injuries or lost a loved one in bicycling accident with a motor vehicle might benefit from the guidance of a lawyer. An attorney may be able help obtain a financial settlement to cover medical expenses or funeral and burial costs.
