New York man dies in suspected drunk-driving crash

A 29-year-old man reportedly died on account of a single-vehicle accident on Oct. 4. According to authorities, the crash took place in Shirley at approximately 6 a.m.

Authorities stated that the driver of the vehicle, a 27-year-old man, was traveling south on Grand Boulevard when he suddenly lost control of the vehicle. The car struck a tree. The vehicle's two occupants, the 27-year-old driver and the 29-year-old passenger, were both transported to Southside Hospital in Bay Shore.

Officials there pronounced the passenger dead. The driver received treatment for injuries that were described as serious. Following the accident, law enforcement officials filed a DWI charge against the driver. However, it was not immediately clear how officials determined that the driver was impaired at the time of the crash.

As this case exemplifies, auto accidents can be deadly. If a preponderance of evidence from a fatal crash were to reveal that impaired driving contributed to the incident, the at-fault driver may be held accountable for the event in multiple ways, including through civil action.

Families who lose a loved one on account of a DUI crash may seek to hold the at-fault driver accountable in civil court. They may retain a personal injury attorney and file a wrongful death claim against the party whose actionable behavior, such as driving under the influence, caused the crash, seeking financial compensation for the losses they suffered in connection with the deadly accident.

These losses may be financial. For example, many families must deal with funeral bills, burial costs and other end-of-life expenses associated with the death of their loved one. In the event that the decedent had contributed income to dependents or the family household while alive, then bereaved family members may also seek lost earnings.
