Pedestrian accidents can be costly

As many pedestrians in New York already know, the risk of suffering injuries during a traffic accident is an ineradicable reality of life. Nationwide, a total of 76,000 pedestrian injuries were reported to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration in 2012. That amounts to approximately nine injuries every hour. Moreover, according to the NHTS, more than 12 pedestrians were killed on average each day across the country due to traffic accidents.

Being struck by a car is a leading cause of pedestrian injuries and is responsible for the most pedestrian deaths, research indicates. In 2012, a total of 4,743 people died as a result of pedestrian accidents. Research shows that these fatal accidents are most likely to occur in urban areas and during the evening hours. Furthermore, the majority of victims of deadly pedestrian crashes are male.

This number of pedestrian fatalities in 2012 is relatively consistent with the number of such deaths in 2001, which was 4,901. However, authorities say that there has been a downward trend in the reported accident injuries among pedestrians since 1991, though it is important to note that not all pedestrian-involved traffic accidents resulting in injury are reported to authorities.

Authorities also note that pedestrian accidents can be very costly to treat. For pedestrian victims under the age of 15 alone, the total cost of treatment exceeds $5 billion per year, reportedly.

Indeed, people who have been hospitalized on account of a pedestrian accident are often left to face tremendous costs, not to mention the expenses associated with ongoing rehabilitation and the loss of earnings from missing work. However, victims of a pedestrian accident may have legal recourse for these financial damages. By filing a personal injury lawsuit in civil court, accident victims may seek total compensation for their accident-related losses. An attorney may help victims in such a circumstance.
