A distracted bus driver has been found at fault for an accident in North Hudson on July 18. Police determined that alcohol, drugs, cellphone use, mechanical issues and road and weather conditions were not factors in the fatal accident.

Whiplash is probable after a car accident

People from the New York area who are experiencing dull and aching neck pain, equilibrium problems, dizziness, difficulty concentrating or headaches after being in a car accident may have whiplash. While whiplash can occur after any type of fall or injury, it occurs the most frequently in a car wreck because of the sudden back and forth jolting of the neck. The symptoms of this medical condition may be less moderate at first, but without proper medical attention, they might become more severe with time.

Birth injuries from forceps

Many mothers in New York may have had their baby delivered through the use of forceps. These are relatively simple mechanical tools that can be used to help guide a child through the birth canal in the event of a difficult vaginal delivery.

Safety of outpatient surgery centers put into question

The issue of safety at outpatient surgery centers has come into question since the death of Joan Rivers on Sept. 4. The actress and comedian died after suffering brain damage during routine throat procedures at a New York center, which federal officials investigated. The probe revealed that the clinic violated numerous regulations related to Rivers' death. In an earlier analysis of 244,000 outpatient surgeries from 2005 to 2010, researchers at the University of Michigan discovered several risk factors, including hypertension, overweight and obstructive lung disease, related to serious complications and death within the 72 hours following surgery. The study found 21 deaths and 232 serious complications, including kidney failure, among the outpatient surgery cases. According to another study, about one in every 1,000 patients develops serious complications following a procedure and require hospitalization.
