New York bus accident may cost teen her leg

A teenager suffered a severe leg injury on Feb. 13 when an MTA bus struck her while she tried to cross the street in Williamsburg. A law enacted in May 2014 will result in the driver who hit the 15-year-old girl facing criminal misdemeanor charges.

The authorities reported that the pedestrian accident occurred around 8:45 a.m. as the teen attempted to cross north on Grand Street while the Q59 bus turned left onto the street after coming from the south on Union Avenue, and the girl's leg became pinned under the bus after it hit her. The teenager was taken to Bellevue Hospital in stable condition, but it seems likely that she will lose her leg as a result of the crash.

Under a New York City law passed in May 2014, injuring or killing pedestrians or cyclists who have the right of way is a criminal misdemeanor. Previous offenses usually counted as traffic violations, but the 58-year-old bus driver was arrested and charged with failure to exercise due care under the new law. A representative for Transportation Alternatives reported that eight out of nine pedestrian fatalities involving the MTA in 2014 were similar to this accident as the drivers did not yield while making a turn.

This preventable incident shows the impact that an accident could have on a victim as the loss of a limb would be a life changing event with long-term consequences. When a negligent driver causes a crash, a victim may be able to file a personal injury claim to regain lost expenses relating to the accident. Additionally, one might be able to seek compensation for the future costs a serious injury will likely require.
