New York cabbie pins woman between two taxis

A woman in New York City was severely injured after an early-morning accident left her pinned between the cab into which she was loading groceries and a cab that struck her. The accident, which occurred near Times Square, sent the woman to the hospital for surgery and raised a number of questions about the underlying causes of the accident.

Police and taxi commission officials stated the accident was caused by a rookie driver. However, the driver claims his brakes were not functioning properly when he attempted to avoid the collision, after admitting he did not initially see the woman. The impact left her with serious injuries that required medical intervention. The California woman, who had come to New York to attend the funeral of an old friend, was to be joined by her family while she recovers from the wounds and aftermath of the accident.

Witnesses report the cab operated by the rookie driver slammed into the rear of the second cab, injuring the woman. A police responder employed a belt as a makeshift tourniquet to staunch the woman's bleeding. Neither driver was cited immediately for the accident. The woman's injuries, while serious enough to warrant surgical intervention, were reported by police to not pose immediate danger to her life. The cause of the accident remains under investigation.

After a pedestrian accident, an attorney may begin by examining the factors that led to the accident, including traffic flow, time of day, weather conditions and unusual activity in the streets at the time. The attorney might review accident reports from first responders and evaluations from medical staff to determine the severity of the injuries and the recovery prognosis. After this, the attorney may issue a demand for settlement or proceed to trial.
