The prevalence of crashes among young drivers

Parents in New York might be concerned after learning that traffic crashes are the primary of cause of teen deaths in the United States, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. It could be helpful to know the factors involved in the crashes to help young drivers prevent them.

About 292,000 young drivers between the ages of 16 and 19 were treated for car accident injuries in 2011. The same year, about 2,650 died in crashes, which means that seven young drivers died in crashes every day. Drivers between 15 and 24 account for just 14 percent of the national population but represent 30 percent of total expenses for male crash injuries and 28 percent of total expenses for female crash injuries.

In New York, a total of 145 people were killed in traffic crashes involving 15- to 20-year-old drivers in 2012, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Of these fatalities, 50 were teen drivers and 42 were passengers in their vehicles. The rest of the fatalities included 28 occupants of other vehicles involved and 25 nonoccupants.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety reports that this age group of drivers is also at a higher risk of traffic collisions than any other age group. Other reports say that the death rate for male teen drivers was nearly twice as high as female teen drivers in 2011. Additionally, the first few months after getting their license is the most risky, and the rate of crashes increases when they have other teen passengers with them. Some other factors involved in teen traffic accidents include alcohol, inexperience and speeding.

Many parents are distraught and upset when they hear that their teens were involved in car accidents, whether they were the drivers, passengers or occupants of other vehicles involved. They could file claims for personal injury compensation on behalf of their children if the negligence of others was the cause.
