Faster method for Lyme disease detection has been developed

New York residents may have heard that a test that is capable of testing for Lyme disease faster than traditional methods has been developed. Conventional tests often miss the early stages of the disease as there is often no presence of the pathogenic bacteria in the person's blood stream, leading to a potential misdiagnosis.

Lyme disease is caused by a bacteria that is transferred into the bloodstream via a tick bite. The infected person may suffer symptoms that include headaches, redness, fever and pain in the joints. The disease is treated through antibiotics. If the person does not seek treatment, the disease may reoccur multiple times.

The new method may potentially overcome this issue by looking for specific proteins that may be found on the cell walls that are shed by the bacteria that causes the disease. The method separates the different proteins that are found in the blood by molecular weight. The proteins are then screened. The trials involving the method have been successful and have allowed researchers to make a diagnosis up to three weeks earlier than the conventional method allows. Further, the method may be used for the detection of other bacterial infections.

A misdiagnosis can cause a person to suffer serious complications and symptoms that may need expensive treatment. In many cases, the financial situation of a victim of a failure to diagnose will be worsened due to an inability to return to work for a prolonged period of time. People who have been affected in such a manner may want to have the assistance of a medical malpractice attorney in seeking appropriate compensation.
