Misdiagnosing multiple sclerosis

Not all health conditions are easily diagnosed. The difficulty is caused by several factors, including a lack of biomarkers that doctors can test for, as well as symptoms that can mimic other conditions. Unfortunately, a failure to diagnose serious conditions can result in incredible suffering for a New York patient. It can also seriously compromise the integrity and efficacy of a patient's treatment plan.

One example of a condition that is often misdiagnosed is multiple sclerosis. Because there is no definitive test that a physician can use to diagnose the condition, many individuals suffer a worsened condition as a result of delayed treatment. In addition, a study published in a peer-reviewed medical journal in August 2016 showed that 72 percent of participants were given medication for an entirely different disease.

While a misdiagnosis of this type does not necessarily mean that an individual has a negligent physician, there are situations where this may be the case. Unfortunately, the condition of a person with MS may deteriorate significantly while medical professionals continue to treat the patient for a condition that he or she does not have. In fact, some of these treatments are risky in and of themselves. As a result, an already ill person may be subjected to additional and unnecessary side-effects from medications and other procedures.

Individuals who believe that their medical condition has been misdiagnosed and improperly treated may benefit from speaking with an experienced medical malpractice attorney. In order to be successful in a lawsuit, it must be established that the misdiagnosis constituted a failure to exhibit the appropriate standard of care, and an attorney for a plaintiff could use the opinions of medical experts in order to attempt to do so.
