Teen traffic deaths on the rise due to distracted driving

In 2015, traffic fatalities around the U.S. increased by 7.2 percent compared to 2014. This was the largest percentage increase in 50 years and the first i since 2007. A report by the Governors Highway Safety Association found that car accident deaths among teens increased by 10 percent in 2015, which is more than any other age group. New York parents of young drivers should pay close attention to that latter statistic.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, "human choice" was a major factor in the 2015 increase. For example, distracted driving deaths jumped by 8.8 percent, deaths related to not wearing seat belts jumped 4.9 percent, impaired driving deaths increased 3.2 percent and speeding-related deaths increased 3 percent.

Approximately 3,000 teens die in car accidents each year. To save lives, safety experts recommend that drivers of all ages put away their smartphones while behind the wheel. It is particularly important for parents to avoid using their phones while driving to teach their children how important it is to avoid distractions. Meanwhile, young passengers can play an important role by insisting drivers not use their cellphones or other devices.

New York residents who have been injured in a car accident caused by a distracted driver may want to meet with a personal injury attorney to learn how they can seek compensation for their losses. If the driver was a teenager, there are some circumstances under which the parents could be held financially responsible.
