Study ranks states in terms of dangerous drivers

According to a study by CarInsuranceComparison.com, New York drivers are neither the safest nor the most dangerous in the nation. They ranked roughly in the middle in a study of American drivers that examined speeding, careless driving, and drunk driving as well as not wearing seatbelts or obeying traffic signals. It also analyzed fatalities per 100 million miles traveled.

Tied with Louisiana for first place, Texas has lost at least one person on the road each day for the past 16 years. The state was in ninth place for speeding and fatalities per 100 million miles and third place for drunk driving. Louisiana was in first place for not obeying signals and fifth place for careless driving and fatalities per mile. A spokesman for the website that did the study said the data shows the influence human error has upon traffic accidents.

Road fatalities are on the rise as well. After declining for years, they went up more than 7 percent from 2014 to 2015. This was the largest percent increase since 1966. In 2015, almost 36,000 people died in traffic accidents. The National Highway Transportation Safety Administration is working with policy experts, local and state officials, and others to bring those numbers down.

Accidents that are not fatal may still be life-changing. Serious injuries from an auto accident may take weeks, months or even years to recover from. Treatment and rehabilitation may be expensive in addition to the lost income from missing work. When insurance companies do not pay enough compensation to cover these expenses, injured individuals may want to speak to an attorney about their options. If the accident happened due to another driver's negligence or for some other reason, such as faulty equipment or a poorly maintained roadway, one solution might be filing a civil lawsuit against the responsible party or parties.
