Pedestrians are at risk: 3 shocking statistics

Pedestrian accidents are horrific and often leave individuals with serious injuries if they survive. Many pedestrians suffer life-altering injuries or death because they have no protection against the impact of a vehicle. The faster a vehicle travels, the more likely it is that the pedestrian will be killed.

There are many facts about pedestrian accidents in New York that may surprise you, especially in the city. Here are three that you may not have known.

1. Pedestrians are 10 times more likely to be killed than the motor vehicle occupant when involved in a collision

This fact isn't very surprising, considering the fact that pedestrians have no protection against an accident. Even though some drivers do get injured when they're involved in a pedestrian accident, pedestrians are much more likely to need medical care.

2. Drivers failing to yield cause up to 27 percent of fatal pedestrian accidents

Using a crosswalk should help you prevent accidents, but that doesn't always work. Drivers who aren't paying attention or who want to get through an intersection quickly may fail to yield to pedestrians. When they fail to yield, pedestrians have no chance to get out of the way. That leads to a crash that could have been prevented if the driver would have stopped as required by law.

3. Around 80 percent of crashes involving pedestrians are caused by male drivers

Interestingly, it's not females who are most likely to hit a pedestrian. Instead, it's men. There is no specific reason for this, but men may be more likely to hit pedestrians due to being distracted, driving aggressively or feeling drowsy.

These are some quick statistics about pedestrian crashes in New York. Drivers can help lower the risk to pedestrians by slowing down and paying attention, especially in busy city areas. Pedestrians, always look both ways and cross quickly.
