Doctor's error in judgment causes woman to be quadriplegic

When you go to your doctor, you expect that their medical knowledge will help you with whatever is ailing you, but for one woman who went in to see her doctor for migraines, she ended up undergoing an unnecessary medical procedure, causing her to be paralyzed.

The medical malpractice incident occurred in October 2006 when the woman went to see her doctor because of migraine headaches she had been experiencing. Her doctor ordered an angiogram to take a closer look at an abnormal vein in her brain.

During the procedure, when the dye for the angiogram was injected into the blood vessels of her brain, the woman suffered a vasospasm and went into a coma. She woke up two weeks later and was a quadriplegic. What the doctor found out after the procedure is that the vein that they were looking at had nothing to do with the migraine headaches she was experiencing, and that the angiogram wasn't necessary.

The woman was happy to be alive, but filed suit against the hospital and the doctor. Prior to the accident, she was a property manager for her family's business as well as an active mother of her two children. Last week the woman was awarded $22 million for the medical malpractice that she experienced and the award will be used for past and future economic losses as well as for human suffering.

The consequences of this medical malpractice case are tragic. As a patient you need to pursue answers and consult with an experienced personal injury attorney if you feel that you have received substandard medical care. The attorney can help you figure out if you have a case and develop a plan that fits your situation and benefits you the most.

While the woman is pleased about the verdict, she remains confined to a wheelchair and requires around-the-clock care.
