Child dies from birth injuries just before third birthday

Many women are making the decision to have a midwife-assisted birth in the comfort of their own home, rather than opting for a hospital birth. While this choice is a good one for many families, it comes with some risks. Those risks are multiplied when the midwife who is attending the birth doesn't react appropriately when it becomes obvious that there is an emergency situation at hand.

One family has first-hand experience about some of the risks associated with a home birth. Unfortunately, they also understand the dangers of a midwife who doesn't contact emergency personnel when help is needed. The result was a son who suffered for his entire life from birth injuries. He never spoke a word, crawled, walked, or achieved many other milestones.

The mother's labor and delivery seemed to be progressing until she began bleeding profusely. It's unclear why the midwife in attendance didn't immediately call an ambulance. Placental abruption was the cause of the bleeding, which almost resulted in death for both the mother and the newborn baby. In fact, medical professionals have said that it was a miracle that either of them survived.

The family was able to spend almost three years with their son before he died. His death might have been prevented if the proper precautions had been taken.

An at-home birth with a midwife's assistance may continue to be an appealing option for many women. However, if the situation does not go as expected and a birth injury results from improper care, an experienced medical malpractice attorney may be able to help a family recover compensation for their injuries and losses.
