Brooklyn nursing home neglect leads to wrongful death suit

The elderly should be treated with care, love and respect. Their children provide the effort and sometimes the finances to assure that their aged loved ones are given the best care at the twilight of their lives. Nursing homes, by and large, provide that much needed care, but a few do not.

One nursing home near Queens, New York, has incurred several wrongful death lawsuits from the relatives of patients, claiming nursing home neglect. The Brooklyn nursing home is facing a $40 million lawsuit filed by a patient's daughter after the death of her mother. This is the fourth lawsuit for the nine-story home -- the other lawsuits also claim prior incidents of nursing home negligence.

The woman's mother, who had suffered from dementia, was forced to move from the facility after the staff could no longer handle her needs. She died a few months later. The daughter was under the impression that the nursing home was state accredited, but in fact it had been operating without a license for years.

Relatives want nothing but the best care for their aging loved ones. The high nursing home fees are all worth it as long as their loved ones are taken care of properly.

On the other hand, when family members see their elders, whom they hold dear, suffer serious injuries or lose their lives due to negligence on the part of the facility or staff, they can take a page from this woman's book. Filing for compensation in the case of serious injuries or filing a wrongful death suit if a person is killed can help families move forward from the devastation.
