Goals for improving care may help lessen nursing home neglect

Here in Queens, New York, residents hold senior citizens in high regard. The elderly are honored for their earlier contributions in life and to the community. It is only fitting that when they reach the twilight of their life, they are able to enjoy certain comforts and privileges. That is where nursing homes come in.

Nursing homes are a safe haven for the elderly to receive medical care, everyday assisted care and to get involved in enjoyable activities. However, sadly, some senior citizens do not receive much-needed care and are subjected to nursing home neglect and other abuses instead. In response to this, the Advancing Excellence in America's Nursing Homes Campaign has released nine goals to improve the quality and service of nursing homes.

The goals include improving the staff stability. Highly valued as the cornerstone of nursing homes, a stable staff ensures continuity of clinical guidelines. Another goal is the use of the consistent assignment. This refers to delegating the same staff in order to promote familiarity. This would then equate to a staff knowing resident routines as well as subtle changes in the residents, which are crucial in assisted living.

Other goals include reduction of hospitalization, increasing resident mobility, reduction of pressure ulcers and lessening the symptoms of pain of the residents who are battling diseases. Managing and preventing infections and proper medication finish the list.

While the goals are truly noble, proper execution is needed so senior citizens in Queens can reap the rewards. However, in a situation where the elderly person is subject to nursing home abuse, it is best that relatives seek help from the proper authorities. The victim of nursing home abuse or the victim's family may also wish to consult a lawyer who is familiar with medical cases to learn about his or her options. Although the elderly person is in the twilight of his or her life, the senior citizen deserves all the care and respect that there is to give.
