Young mother left with brain damage after cosmetic surgery

Cosmetic surgery may be commonplace in New York, but it's still surgery, with all the risks that come with going under the knife. When general anesthetic is involved, the risks are particularly high.

A young mother has been left brain damaged and unable to walk after complications following breast augmentation surgery.

According to the family, their daughter's problems stemmed from a clinic's use of a spinal tap rather than administering anesthesia through intubation. One of the anesthesiologists participating in the procedure had previously been named as defendant in a wrongful death suit over the death of a woman after she had undergone cosmetic surgery. He had also been found guilty of selling drugs online illegally.

Clinic staffers said that the young woman had not been forthcoming with them about previous difficulties she had experienced under anesthesia during the birth of her child. A spokesperson for the family angrily denied that accusation.

Her family said the complications left her with a permanent disability. She can't speak, can't walk or go to the bathroom by herself and is completely unable to care for her young child.

When New Yorkers choose to have cosmetic or any other type of surgery, they trust in medical professionals to adhere to professionals standards. They trust in doctors' training to know how to perform the surgery and to respond appropriately if anything goes wrong. When the care falls below professional standards, and the patient is injured as a result, the injured may seek compensation for medical expenses, lost wages and other damages through a medical malpractice lawsuit.

Medical malpractice lawsuits are technically complicated and sometimes emotionally challenging. It's important for the injured and their families to have legal help from New York attorneys with experience in this difficult area of the law.
