New York bus accident injures 27

An accident involving a bus, a tractor-trailer and a car on Interstate 81 in New York in the early morning hours of Nov. 6 left one person in critical condition and injured 26 others. The critically injured man was behind the wheel of the bus, and the other injured individuals were among the 52 passengers on board. The accident took place in the highway's southbound lanes near Syracuse at approximately 2:30 a.m.

According to the Onondaga County Sheriff's Office, the accident occurred when the bus, which was en route to New York City, struck a stationary car that had struck a guard rail. The bus then struck a tractor-trailer on the highway's shoulder. Police report that the driver of the car has been charged with driving while intoxicated. The truck driver had pulled over to offer help after noticing that the car had crashed.

Emergency response personnel worked for two hours to extricate the critically injured driver from the bus, and he was then transported to a Syracuse hospital for treatment. The 26 bus passengers hurt in the crash suffered minor injuries, and 10 ambulances were called in to transport them to area medical facilities. The southbound lanes of Interstate 81 were subsequently closed as first responders went about their work. The roadway was reopened to traffic at about 6:30 a.m.

Those injured in motor vehicle accidents often suffer debilitating injuries that require costly medical treatment and extended physical therapy. While many auto accidents are unavoidable, others are caused by reckless, distracted or impaired drivers. Those who suffer injury, loss or damage due to the negligent actions of motorists may pursue civil remedies, and a personal injury attorney could bring a lawsuit on their behalf. This litigation may seek compensation for an accident victim's property damage, medical expenses and lost income.
