White Plains firefighter charged with DWI in fatal crash

A New York firefighter has been charged with criminally negligent homicide and DWI following an early morning car crash that killed a Port Chester woman and injured her husband on Nov. 3. Authorities are running tests to determine if the 34-year-old man, who is a member of the White Plains Fire Department, had drugs in his system at the time of the accident.

According to police, the firefighter was off duty when he allegedly drove his Chevrolet Tahoe along South Lexington Avenue in White Plains at around 4:30 a.m. Reports suggest that the vehicle was traveling in lanes of opposing traffic when it broadsided a Honda carrying a 47-year-old newspaper delivery woman and her 49-year-old husband. The impact forced the Honda approximately 200 feet down the roadway. The woman, who had been folding newspapers in the back of the car, was pronounced dead at the scene. Her husband was taken to the hospital with upper body and internal injuries.

Police said the firefighter had a blood alcohol content level of .145 percent, which is nearly twice the legal limit. When officers searched his SUV, they found evidence he may have also been under the influence of cocaine and MDMA at the time of the accident. Reports say that he has been suspended from his job at the fire department without pay.

When someone is killed in an auto accident caused by a drunk driver, the family left behind may choose to seek compensation for their losses by filing a wrongful death lawsuit. An attorney may be able to build a strong wrongful death case against the driver responsible for the crash and help the victim's family obtain a financial settlement that covers medical expenses, funeral costs and other damages.
