Pedestrian killed in NYC bus accident in Brooklyn

At about 6 p.m. on Dec. 21, a 78-year-old man was hit by a New York City bus as he was walking in the East Flatbush area of Brooklyn. The 57-year-old male bus driver was turning from Farragut Road onto New York Avenue when he hit the pedestrian. The man who was hit died at the scene.

The bus driver has been employed by the Metropolitan Transportation Authority since 2007. He is being held out-of-service until the conclusion of the investigation.

Under New York's Vision Zero initiative, which is meant to decrease the number of traffic deaths in the city, the bus driver received a misdemeanor charge for failing to yield. This charge carries a potential of 15 days in jail and a fine of up to $50. According to reports, some colleagues of the bus driver were upset over his arrest that they briefly protested, and some depot areas experienced delays.

When someone loses their life in a pedestrian accident, the family members of the victim could be eligible to file a wrongful death claim. While financial compensation cannot take the place of a loved one, a financial award can assist the family in managing the unexpected expenses that occur when a loved one passes away. For instance, expenses may be recovered for hospital treatment as well as funeral costs. Additionally, a family could also be compensated for the loss of future economic support and lost companionship. An attorney may assist family members in determining the best course of action specific to their particular situation as well as provide resources to assist them in managing a challenging and stressful time.
