New York DWI accident leaves pedestrian critically injured

Authorities report that an accident involving a car and a pedestrian in Coram at around 11:30 p.m. on Dec. 24 left the pedestrian with severe injuries. A Coram Fire Department ambulance transported the injured party to Stony Brook University Hospital where she was listed as being in critical condition. The nature of her injuries was not reported.

According to the local police department, the accident occurred on Fife Drive when a 56-year-old Bellport man driving a 2002 Hyundai Sonata southbound struck a 50-year-old woman walking in a northbound direction. The driver was arrested on a charge of DWI, and Vehicular Crime Unit detectives were continuing to investigate the accident at the time of reporting.

A person struck by a motor vehicle in a pedestrian accident may come away with broken bones, back and neck injuries or even more serious problems such as spinal cord or brain damage. A personal injury claim may be brought against an at-fault party to address the costs of these types of problems and others that may include extended rehabilitation and care, medical expenses and loss of work.

In any accident that involves injury to a pedestrian, a collision investigation will be used to determine if the driver behaved in a negligent manner that led to the pedestrian being struck. A driver may be found liable for injuries or damages if it can be proven that he or she drove while under the influence of drugs or alcohol, drove at an excessive rate of speed or was driving while distracted or fatigued. In this particular case, a police report showing evidence of DWI would help support the plaintiff's case of driver negligence.
