Distractions teens deal with while driving

New York parents may spend a great deal of time emphasizing the importance of putting the cellphone away while driving, but recent literature suggests that efforts to reduce phone use while behind the wheel may not be affecting distracted driving overall. Driving distractions are certainly not limited to texting and calling, but because these have been some of the most significant distractions in recent years, the focus of many safety campaigns has moved away from the general danger of distracted driving behaviors.

The focus on cellphone use is reasonable because with significant educational initiatives, an estimated 40 percent of teens reportedly continue to participate in text messaging activity while driving. However, approximately 27 percent of teens report that they change clothes while they are behind the wheel. Others engage in multi-tasking behaviors such as doing homework or putting on makeup. Fortunately, early studies indicate that a short class of just 20 to 40 minutes addressing the risks associated with multitasking might increase teen awareness and caution.

Distractions are not strictly limited to teen drivers, but important driving habits are established in the early years of driving. Distracted driving continues to be a major factor in auto accidents for all age groups, making it just as important for parents to reconsider their activities while on the road. Parents can set an example for their teen drivers by refraining from cellphone use and other multi-tasking behaviors while on the road.

The legal implications of a car accident caused by distracted driving can be serious for a family, especially if an injured party suffers significant medical or financial damages. A person who is injured in such an accident might choose to seek compensation in court with assistance from a personal injury attorney.
