New York woman killed when SUV crashes into AT&T store

One person was killed, and two others were injured when an SUV plowed into an AT&T phone store on Long Island March 30. The accident happened around 11 a.m. on Northern Boulevard in Great Neck.

Police said a 65-year-old woman lost control of her Toyota SUV as she was attempting to park and smashed through the front plate glass window of the building. A 66-year-old woman sitting on a couch in the store was struck and became pinned by the vehicle. Nearly a dozen other customers and witnesses worked to lift the SUV off the woman before emergency crews arrived. The victim, a Great Neck resident, was taken to North Shore University Hospital where she died around two hours later. Another customer and a store employee were transported to area hospitals with non-life-threatening injuries.

Investigators said the crash appears to be accidental, and the Toyota driver passed a field sobriety test. No charges are expected to be filed.

When someone is killed in a car accident caused by another driver, the victim's family has the right to file a civil wrongful death lawsuit even if police choose not to file charges in the case. With the help of a lawyer, the family could use accident reconstruction reports and witness accounts to prove the responsible party directly caused the death of their loved one and is financially liable for damages. If the claim is successful, a court could compel the at-fault driver to pay damages, including medical expenses before death, funeral and burial costs, pain and suffering before death, loss of income and loss of companionship. Anyone who has lost a loved one in a car accident could learn more about their legal rights by consulting with a lawyer.
