The importance of proper diagnosis in New York

According to a study done in 2013, doctors believed that the misdiagnosis rate for cancer was between zero and 10 percent. However, a 2014 study published in a peer-reviewed health care journal found that the number was actually 28 percent. Errors were most prevalent in cases involving breast or lung cancer. Providing patients with the proper diagnosis and treatment plan is especially important because it doubled the likelihood of survival in a survey of 10,000 British patients.

A study conducted by the Australian Medical Association found that there was an optimal amount of information that patients could handle without reducing their odds of survival. Those who were given too much information about potential side effects left them stressed and less likely to survive due to the effects of stress on the immune system. Those who were too optimistic about their chances of survival were no more likely to survive than the general population.

Only patients who were given a realistic view of what they faced fared better overall. Regardless of what information patients are given, it is recommended that they seek a second opinion and ask as many questions as possible. In some cases, a doctor will provide the name of another medical to seek that second opinion from before moving forward with treatment.

Patients who have experienced a delayed cancer misdiagnosis often suffer as a result of their conditions worsening until a proper diagnosis is made. People who are in this situation may want to speak with an attorney to determine if there is any recourse available. If, after a review of the patient's records and a consultation with medical experts, the attorney can determine that there was a failure to observe the requisite standard of care, it may be advisable to seek damages from the responsible practitioner through a medical malpractice lawsuit.
