1 killed, 1 injured in 2 hit-and-run crashes on same day

While New York City saw a drop in fatal pedestrian traffic accidents from 2014 to 2014, these types of accidents can still occur as two took place within hours of each other on Jan. 30. One happened when a woman in Williamsburg headed to a livery cab on Rodney St. near Hope St. tried to cross the street at around 1:15 a.m. when she was hit by a silver BMW.

In this case, the driver of the BMW fled the scene while the woman went to Bellevue Hospital after suffering head trauma and was in serious condition. The other accident took place hours after the first and unfortunately involved a fatality as another BMW exited the George Washington Bridge in Washington Heights and hit a man and a woman near Amsterdam Ave. The 34-year-old driver was reportedly under the influence of alcohol when he lost control of his vehicle, and he also hit a Ford F-150 and then sped away.

The injured man and woman, who were both 46 years of age, were taken to Lincoln Hospital in the Bronx, but the man did not survive. The driver of the BMW later surrendered and was charged with drunk driving, vehicular manslaughter, leaving the scene of an accident and criminally negligent homicide.

The amount of pedestrian fatalities may be falling in New York City, but pedestrians still face severe risks when involved in vehicle accidents. Those who do suffer serious injuries in an accident could seek compensation through a lawsuit filed with the assistance of an attorney against the responsible party or parties. This may include not only medical expenses after the incident but costs for related future medical needs as well. The attorney can help demonstrate that the accident was caused by the motorist's negligence, such as speeding, driving while impaired or driving while distracted.
