New study offers insight for New York patients

A study published on Jan. 21 suggests that patients with colon cancer may need more than surgery if they are CDX2-negative. It is not common for those with stage 2 colon cancer to get chemotherapy because the risks generally outweigh the benefits. However, for at least 5 to 10 percent of the population, the tumors may return if they are treated with just surgery alone, according to the lead author of the study.

For patients with stage 2 colon cancer, they still have a good chance to recover because the cancer is still limited to the colon. Overall, their five-year survival rate is 63 percent to 87 percent. It was discovered that 91 percent of patients with CDX2-negative cancers that were treated with both surgery and chemotherapy lived for five years free from the disease, as opposed to 56 percent who only received surgery.

Researchers determined that cells without the CDX2 protein behaved more like stem cells that are less regulated within the colon. Therefore, any cancerous cells in that part of the body were likely to be more aggressive. Furthermore, it was determined that patients can be screened for the protein with an antibody test, which may be more accurate compared to a genetic scan. The results of the research were published in the New England Journal of Medicine, but the study's lead author cautioned that more trials will be needed to fully verify the data.

The failure to properly assess and treat colon cancer may lead to a worsened condition and result in serious harm. Those who are in this position may want to have the assistance of a medical malpractice attorney in seeking appropriate compensation from the at-fault practitioner or facility.
