New York pedestrian seriously injured when hit by stolen SUV

According to news sources, a 52-year-old woman who was walking her dog was struck and seriously injured by a stolen GMC Envoy. The incident happened on Feb. 4 around 10 a.m. in Brooklyn.

Law enforcement authorities reported that they were dispatched to East New York following a report of a grand larceny at a tire shop that was in progress at the time. Upon arrival, officers report they recognized a GMC Envoy there as being a stolen vehicle. When officers tried to stop the SUV, the driver fled, allegedly traveling the wrong way down a one-way street.

As the driver arrived at an intersection on Hemlock Avenue, he crashed into a Toyota Avalon that was traveling through it. The SUV's driver then collided with the 59-year-old woman who was walking her dog on the sidewalk before the GMC turned over onto its side. Police arrested the SUV's 20-year-old driver at the scene of the accident. Both the 52-year-old pedestrian and the 59-year-old Avalon driver were transported to the hospital with injuries. The pedestrian woman's injuries were characterized as serious, but the NYPD said they do expect her to live. Her dog also survived with multiple fractures and was taken to a local animal hospital by the woman's family.

Pedestrians are more likely to suffer from serious injuries when they are struck by a motor vehicle than are occupants of a car. Pedestrians do not have the protection afforded by the frame of a car, and they may suffer injuries that may leave them permanently physically or mentally disabled, depending on the location of their injuries. They may want to have the assistance of an attorney to seek compensation in the event that the accident was caused by a negligent driver.
