Paying the bills after a car accident

After a car accident, the bills can quickly pile up. Medical treatment can be expensive. Additionally, if you are unable to go back to work right away, you might miss out on your regular source of income.

There are options available to help you pay the bills after a serious injury. First, New York is a no-fault insurance state. This means that you can secure compensation to help you cover medical expenses, lost wages and other reasonable costs associated with your injury, regardless of who is was at fault. There is a limited time to bring a claim, however.

In New York, you have 30 days after a motor vehicle accident to file for no-fault benefits. You will need to file your claim with the insurance company that covers the vehicle you are driving or riding as a passenger. If you were injured while walking or riding your bicycle, then you would file a claim with that driver's insurer.

Basic no-fault coverage in New York pays up to $50,000. If you need additional coverage above the limit, then you may be able to secure additional coverage if the driver or a member of your household has additional personal injury protection (PIP) coverage. If additional PIP coverage is not available, you may be able to seek coverage under your own health insurance policy.

Speak to an attorney before accepting a settlement

An insurance company is focused on saving money, not on your recovery. As a result, it can be beneficial to speak with a lawyer about your rights and options before accepting a settlement offer. Personal injury attorneys have extensive experience negotiating with insurers and can help ensure that you receive the coverage you need.

Bringing a personal injury claim

A lawyer can also help you determine if you have a claim against the driver or other negligent parties for your injuries. In a personal injury claim, you can pursue compensation to help you cover your medical bills, lost wages, pain and suffering, and any other out-of-pocket expenses that resulted from your accident.
