Front automatic braking reduces accident risk

New Yorkers in the market for a new car may want to opt to purchase the optional front braking and crash prevention features. These have been shown to significantly decrease the risk of being involved in a rear-end collision.

According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, a study showed that automatic braking reduced the risk of rear-end collisions by 40 percent, and forward collision alert systems alone reduced the risk of rear-end collisions by 23 percent.

The IIHS compared specific automobile models with the optional systems installed with their counterparts that didn't have the systems installed when analyzing police reports from 22 states covering rear-end collisions between 2010 and 2014. While automatic braking didn't prevent all rear-end collisions, the IIHS found that the systems significantly reduced the occurrence of injuries in crashes that did result because of the slowed speed at the time of impact. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is working with automakers to secure an agreement to make the systems standard on all new cars. The findings of the IIHS study comport with data from other studies that also looked into the efficacy of these systems in crash prevention and injury reduction.

A rear-end car accident can cause significant injuries to the occupants of the vehicle that is hit. People should try to take advantage of the available optional equipment so they are less likely to cause such an accident. However, these types of collisions will continue to take place, and a person who is in a car that has been hit from behind can often suffer serious injuries. They may want to have the assistance of legal counsel in pursuing compensation from the at-fault driver.
