More accurate tuberculosis test has been developed

New York residents who have been diagnosed with tuberculosis may be interested to learn that a blood test that was developed at the Stanford University School of Medicine was found to be more accurate than the traditional skin prick test. The skin prick and associated blood test cannot distinguish between active tuberculosis and those who have had the vaccination.

The test, called the Khatri test, has the ability to distinguish among patients who have active tuberculosis, latent tuberculosis and those who have been vaccinated. Additionally, this test can also identify the disease in patients who have HIV, something the traditional test often cannot do. Researchers claimed that the test had an 86 percent sensitivity in children, which is something that the World Health Organization was looking for. Even further, the Khatri tuberculosis test could be used to monitor how patients are responding to treatments.

About one-third of all individuals worldwide are infected with tuberculosis. Although many do not get the active form of the disease, millions of children and adults are still affected. To combat the disease, the researchers are working to develop the test so that it can be used worldwide.

A delayed diagnosis of a disease such as tuberculosis can impact a person's quality of life, and it can result in additional medical expenses as a result of the worsening of the condition during the period when it was left untreated. Patients who have been harmed by such a failure to make a proper diagnosis may want to discuss their options with a medical malpractice attorney.
