Mother says doctors misdiagnosed baby

New York parents may be interested to learn that a mother says doctors misdiagnosed her son and should be held accountable for medical malpractice. According to her, doctors at HealthCare Partners in California said her 8-month-old child had a virus and did not listen to her concerns as his rash and fever worsened.

The woman said she returned to the hospital five times. She said she then took the child to Long Beach Memorial Medical Center. The facility did an X-ray and found a penny stuck in the baby's throat that was affecting his ability to breathe. The penny was removed at a different hospital, and specialists said that it had been there for at least 3 weeks. It had been the cause of his symptoms and gave the child ulcers.

The mother wants HealthCare Partners to reimburse her for medical expenses and lost wages. However, despite starting a petition that got 85,000 signatures, the woman did not receive a response until she complained to the Medical Board of California. HealthCare Partners said the penny was not in the child's throat when she visited, and her claim was denied. However, the state medical board plans to pursue a claim.

Medical malpractice may take many different forms ranging from misdiagnoses to surgical errors, such as leaving a sponge behind in a patient, to misreading an X-ray or MRI. All of these could result in a worsened condition. Patients who have been harmed as a result of such an error may want to speak with an attorney in order to see what options for seeking compensation they may have.
