WHO-approved HCV quick test

New York residents may be interested to learn that the World Health Organization has prequalified a rapid diagnostic test for hepatitis C. The test is the first of its kind to be endorsed by WHO, and it was created by a South Korean company. It resembles a pregnancy test and is intended to benefit adults in poorer countries.

According to a representative of WHO, most people who have chronic hepatitis C are unaware that they have the infection and are unable to take advantage of the opportunity to be cured. This test may make it easier to get a diagnosis. Other HCV rapid tests that are currently on the market are extremely costly or are of low quality, characteristics that presents issues for a wide distribution. This one is reportedly more cost-effective and can reduce the occurrences of misdiagnosis.

The test works by identifying HCV antibodies in an individual's plasma, blood or serum. Medical professionals do not require significant training in order to conduct the test. The test does not need electricity or is required to be administered in a medical facility. After no more than 20 minutes, the results can be easily read without any additional equipment for interpretation. The one drawback of the test is that it can detect reactive specimens and additional testing is required to determine current infections.

A failure to diagnose the hepatitis C virus can lead to a worsened medical condition, often resulting in the need for aggressive medical care and treatment. Patients who have been harmed in this manner may want to discuss their situations with a medical malpractice attorney. The attorney could review the patient's records and consult with medical experts in order to determine whether the error constituted a failure by the health care practitioner or facility to furnish the requisite standard of care.
