5 bicycle safety tips for the spring season

As the spring weather begins to settle in, there's a good chance you'll find yourself spending more time outdoors. This is particularly true if you enjoy exercising, such as riding your bike or walking to and from work.

Unfortunately, the more time you spend on your bicycle the more concerns you may have about being part of an accident.

On the flipside, there are steps you can take to prevent trouble. Here are five bicycle safety tips that are sure to give you peace of mind this spring:

  • Wear the appropriate safety gear. It doesn't matter if you're taking a short trip or riding your bicycle for a few miles, you need to strap on the appropriate gear before you embark on your journey. This can go a long way in preventing a serious injury in the event of an accident. Tip: Stay current with the latest bike trends to ensure yourself of using the best safety equipment.
  • Avoid the door zone. When riding, you always keep your eyes on the vehicles around you. However, you may focus more on those that are moving, as opposed to those that are parked. Never forget that someone could open a car door into your path.
  • Beware of pedestrians, too. Motor vehicles may be your biggest threat as a bicyclist, but you need to watch out for pedestrians as well. For example, if someone darts in front of your bike it could cause you to swerve and crash.
  • Make eye contact with drivers. This is one of the best ways to guarantee that the person sees you, thus lessening the risk of an accident.
  • Use the bicycle lane, if one is available. This is the safest place to ride, as you don't have to worry about cars or people getting in your way. If there is no bike lane you will be most safe in traffic, not on the sidewalk.

These are just some of the many bicycle safety tips you can implement during the spring season (as well as the rest of the year).

If you find yourself in the unfortunate position of dealing with the aftermath of a bicycle accident, don't hesitate to learn more about your legal rights. You may need to take action against the negligent party, all with hopes of holding him or her financially responsible for the crash.
