Are large cities more dangerous for drivers with child passengers

Car accidents can happen anywhere, but many people assume that driving in big cities like New York is innately more dangerous than driving in less populated areas, e.g., midsize cities or rural areas.

Given the higher density of drivers in metro areas, this is an understandable. Certainly, driving in major cities presents complications, but recent data from researchers at UT Southwestern Medical Center and Harvard indicates that some populations are actually at far greater risk of car accident fatalities in rural parts of the Southeastern United States than in the North.

Children suffer from poor rates of seatbelt use

The study examines factors that contribute to fatalities among children in car accidents. Researchers discovered that one of the most significant issues facing children in car accidents is unused or improperly used restraints.

The figures are simply staggering. Over the four-year period the study spanned, 1,550 children died in fatal accidents in the South, averaging a mortality rate of 1.34 out of 100,000 children each year. In contrast, over the same period of time, car accidents in the Northeast resulted in only 189 child fatalities, yielding a mortality rate of only 0.38 out of 100,000 children per year.

Lack of proper use of restraints is not only a personal matter, it also reflects looser regulations and enforcement of restraint use in the South, which contributes significantly to the number of accidents resulting in child fatalities. All of these factors combine to indicate that Northeastern states, including many densely populated cities, are actually considerably safer for child passengers overall.
