These car safety tips are easy to follow

As the old joke goes, "Take my advice, I'm not using it."

We've all heard the advice about doing a safety check of our cars before pulling out of the driveway, but how many of us really do. Practically speaking, we just don't have the time to do a quick walk-around, the way pilots do before taxing down the runway.

But the reality is, perhaps we should. Most car owners find themselves on the road every day; either commuting to work, heading to the grocery store or setting out for a distant destination. Another reality is that most car accidents happen within a mile or two of home.

Perhaps it is time to pay more attention to overall vehicle safety before starting the engine.

Our roads are getting more crowded, and not everyone drives the safely

When traveling, keep in mind that you're not the only person on the road. For example, Memorial Day travel has reached its highest level in nearly 15 years. So, if you're traveling during this time of the year, you need to be particularly aware of the traffic and common mistakes other drivers may make.

While every driver has his or her own way of doing things when behind the wheel, here are some common safety tips that most people can use to their advantage:

  • Make sure your windshield and windows are clear before driving. It's imperative that you're always able to clearly see the road ahead.
  • Regularly check your child's safety seat for proper installation. You never know what will happen as the days go by, so you need to check on this every now and again.
  • Whenever possible, don't leave loose items on the seats, as these can cause injury in the event of a sudden stop or accident.
  • Become familiar with the three forms of distracted driving: cognitive, visual and manual. Any distraction, regardless of what it may be, can cause an accident.
  • Don't drive when you're tired. This is easier said than done, especially if you find yourself on the road at night, but you never want to drive drowsy.
  • Don't drink and drive. The best way to avoid trouble with alcohol when driving is to avoid it altogether. Don't get behind the wheel if you've had even one drink.

These are the types of safety tips that can help prevent trouble when driving. There's no guarantee you'll never be part of an accident, but these tips can help keep you safe.

If another driver causes an accident, such as someone who was texting instead of paying attention to the road, you may be able to hold him or her responsible for this behavior.

Once you receive medical treatment and understand your long-term prognosis, you can then file an insurance claim and learn more about your legal rights for seeking compensation from the negligent party.
