Child crossing the street fatally struck in hit-and-run accident

Many times it is easier to walk to a place in New York than it is to drive. So, there are often a number of pedestrians on New York's streets at any given time. People stay on sidewalks as much as possible to help ensure their safety, but pedestrians usually have to cross streets to get to where they need to go. Pedestrians have the right-of-way when crossing in crosswalks and are obeying traffic signals, but not all motorists pay attention when they are driving, which places pedestrians at great risk of harm.

This recently occurred when a nine-year-old boy was crossing a street with his mother. While they were crossing, a vehicle making a left turn did not see the boy in the crosswalk and hit him. The boy was brought to the hospital but died there from his injuries. The driver sped off after hitting the boy, but luckily was followed by a cab driver who saw the accident occur. The driver said he did not realize he hit the boy and sped off because he was scared since the cab driver was yelling at him. The driver has been charged with multiple crimes.

Pedestrian accidents are devastating. However, they are especially devastating when a young child is hit and dies as a result. While the family of a victim will never be able to replace a loved one lost in a car accident like this, the family could at least be able to try to hold the negligent driver who caused the accident accountable. By doing so, a surviving family may be able to fill any financial void left by the victim, as compensation may be recoverable through a wrongful death lawsuit.

Unfortunately, there are many pedestrians who are hit in New York each year. It is extremely important that motorists on the road pay attention when making turns and entering intersections to ensure that they do not hit pedestrians who are legally crossing the street. If they do not do so and hit a pedestrian as a result, they may be required to compensate the victims and their families. Experienced attorneys understand how devastating these accidents can be. They also know what it takes to puruse a lawsuit in hopes of finding accountability and compensation for damages suffered.
