Requirements for nursing homes regarding medical treatment

As people grow older in New York, various medical issues tend to arise. These could be physical problems that affect one's ability to move around on their own. It could also be illnesses that arise and require constant care. Sometimes there are issues which affect the mind like Alzheimer's. People in these situations may need to move into nursing homes to receive the adequate care they need. Because these individuals require this type of care it is very important that the nursing homed properly care for them.

That is why there are certain rules that the nursing homes must follow. They must provide each person with the name and contact information for the doctor who will provide their care. They must also inform the person, their doctor and their family members if they were injured in an accident, if treatment needs to be changed, if their condition improves dramatically or if they will be transferred or discharge.

They also must follow and give information regarding advanced directives and allow health care agents and other surrogates make medical decisions for the person. This includes providing information about do not resuscitate orders and providing CPR if desired.

While nursing homes in New York generally do follow the requirements pertaining to medical care, not all do and sometimes mistakes can be made. If the nursing home did not follow the rules in a particular situation and the person suffered injuries or illnesses as a result, the victim may be entitled to compensation as a result of nursing home neglect. This can cover a number of different financial costs including medical bills and other costs that are incurred because of the error.

There are many people in nursing homes in New York that require a wide variety of different cares. Nursing homes have a great responsibility to provide not only the care, but to ensure that the people receive care from the proper doctors. They must also follow the wishes of the people and their family members. Experienced attorneys understand how difficult it can be when loved ones are hurt in nursing homes and may be a useful resource.
