Are millennial drivers a hazard to your health?

Senior citizens often bear the brunt of criticisms about dangerous driving behaviors. But while some seniors certainly are a driving risk, much criticism can be leveled against theĀ  youngest drivers, as well.

It turns out that it's not just "Get off my lawn!" types who blame bad driving on millennials. According to the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety, 88 percent of motorists age 19-24 self-admitted to doing one or more of the following while behind the wheel:

  • Speeding
  • Failing to stop at red lights
  • Texting while driving

AAA surveyed 2,511 drivers in this age demographic and learned some startling revelations that put these drivers and others at risk on the roads.

They engage with their phones

While members of all age groups occasionally admit to sending texts while driving, the rate of millennials who acknowledge doing so was nearly 60 percent compared to the 31 percent of older motorists.

They speed in school zones

Almost 12 percent of millennials find it acceptable to drive 10 mph over school zone speed limits. This compares to the 5 percent of older drivers who take this risk.

They run red lights

Almost 50 percent of millennial drivers admit they ran red lights when they could have safely stopped, in comparison with 36 percent of other drivers.

Traffic dangers rising

With the increased safety technologies becoming standard on many newer model cars and trucks, one might believe that the number of traffic fatalities is decreasing. However, that's not the case, as the year 2015 saw a 7 percent uptick in deaths from accidents on the road.

Drivers also disdain the same behaviors in others in which they also engage, e.g., texting. The hypocrisy of this appears to be lost to many.

Making millennial (and other) drivers aware of the often deadly consequences of their dangerous behaviors is key to altering these risky patterns.

Were you hit by an at-fault millennial driver?

If you were injured in an auto accident caused by a motorist of any age, it might be possible for you to file a claim for damages against the liable party. Should that claim not be resolved to your satisfaction, you may decide to file a personal injury lawsuit in the New York civil courts.
